Abstract
GIS for Spatial Community Resilience Across Geographies
Track: Urban and Regional Planning
Authors: Sheila Steinberg, Steven Steinberg
This presentation examines the use of GIS to achieve resilience in communities across a variety of geographies (mountain, desert, coastal, urban, rural and suburban). The concept of resilience has not been previously examined with an interdisciplinary perspective using GIS. We highlight the role of culture and its influences on perceptions of space, time and place and resultantly how GIS can be used to increase resilience through drawing on the strengths and knowledge of local places.
