Although migratory waterfowl have been implicated in the global spread of avian influenza (AI), the use of GIS to track waterfowl and changes to their habitat is often neglected. Using a novel spatio-temporal near real time approach utilizing remote sensing and next generation weather radar (NEXRAD) to track waterfowl and their habitat, we can predict waterfowl density and begin to quantify spatiotemporal variability in the risk of transmission of AI to commercial and backyard poultry.
