Abstract
Places to Watch: Generating Insights from Weekly Forest Loss Alerts
Track: Conservation
Authors: Sarah Sargent
Global Forest Watch makes forest change information available to the public, but the billions of pixels on the map make it difficult to identify the most concerning clearing. This project turns big data into insights by overlaying important areas for biodiversity, forest intactness, and carbon with near-real time deforestation data to generate monthly “Places to Watch”. These places are sent out to a network of interested actors to create a rapid response to concerning deforestation.
