Abstract
Using Web GIS to Respond to a 1,000 Year Flood Event
Track: Disaster and Emergency Management
Authors: Warren Kron
In August 2016, a no name storm dropped 7 trillion gallons of rain in the Baton Rouge region. As local rivers exceeded record levels the GIS team leveraged its technology to map road closures, coordinate SAR operations, and provide timely information to decision-makers. Analysts compiled data from a variety of sources to develop an estimated flood inundation area web map which had 60,000 views in one week. Hear how IT leaders were able to use Web GIS and shifted away from the norm of paper maps.
