Real-time Detection of Global Wildfire Incidents from Satellite Data
Track: Wildland Fire Management
Authors: David Askov
Many countries produce real-time wildfire data, but mapping the most significant incidents at a global scale has proved challenging. We sought to produce actionable information products using NASA’s LANCE FIRMS hotspot data. Challenges included removing man-made and volcanic hotspots from our analysis, detecting clusters of intense wildfire activity, determining severity levels that are useful at a global scale, and correlating the latest observations with previous hazard delineations.
