Abstract
Using GIS to Quantify Crime Reduction Potential of Near Repeats
Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice

Once a burglary occurs on a street, homes nearby are at higher risk for the next week or two. A recent study found a lower rate of repeats at the micro level than expected. This research uses ArcGIS and python to develop a near repeat potential calculator that automatically counts the number of subsequent burglaries in a space-time window. Having such information allows law enforcement officials to more accurately weigh the cost and potential benefit of a program targeting near repeat burglary.
