Abstract
Paper to Platform: A Mobile GIS Transformation in Kingsport
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Authors: Jake White, Kristen Steach
After years of directing crews with maps printed from its GIS database, the City of Kingsport decided it was time for a change. In 2014, the wastewater team replaced its paper maps with mobile technology—giving field crews the power to add, update or edit GIS asset data on the go, instead of passing hand-drawn corrections to office staff for entry. The move to mobile has delivered significant time savings—approximately 30 minutes per edit—and led to the city’s most accurate GIS database to date.
