Abstract
Arctic Shipping: Environmental Risks and Benefits
Track: Maritime and Ports
Authors: Biswajoy Roy
As the Arctic warms, Arctic shipping is on the rise. This paper explores the environmental risks and benefits of Arctic shipping related to greenhouse gas emissions, black carbon emissions, and oil spills. Automatic Identification System (AIS) data and ArcGIS are used to track Arctic shipping activity and to estimate and geospatially allocate air emissions and oil spill risk. Maps of 2015 shipping activity and emissions are presented.
