Urban environments are challenged to provide mobility for a growing and increasingly diverse population – especially with constrained public right-of-ways. The Vital Streets project in Grand Rapids, MI provides a framework for decision making, enabling the community to make smart, impactful transportation investments. GIS was a critical tool for creating a multimodal network of street types that reflect both the mobility and destination functions of streets in a complex and growing city.
