You Can't Get There from Here: Mapping Access to Canadian Teacher Education

Canadian teacher education is mainly offered in urban centres, resulting in limited access for rural and remote populations. This study examines which Canadians live within a commuting distance from a program – defined as a 1-hour drive, one-way – using Statistics Canada data. The study highlighted as few as 40% of Canadians live within this 1-hour drive. This data served in the creation of a Community-based teacher education program, giving access to prospective teachers in rural Canada.
