Mitigating Wastewater Odor Impacts Using Modeled and Sensory Observations

Odors emitted from sewers and treatment plants can be a nuisance in their neighborhood and a challenge for wastewater agencies. In this paper ArcGIS is used to integrate historical complaint data with recent chemical and sensory analysis of the “most detectable” odorants at the Orange County Sanitation District facilities. Results allow operators to evaluate mitigation methods based on collected odor observations, make timely investigations of complaints and build better community relationships.
