The present situation in China is characterized by a large amount of population, limited land resources, high speed of urbanization, and nonagricultural economic development. How to protect the resources and the environmental conditions for future generations is an arduous task in China as well as in the world. This paper presents the new objectives of town planning for sustainable urban development and suggests the methods of creating the indicators and their criteria. A framework of GIS for sustainable urban development is given in the paper.
