Drawing Lines on the Map Conservation Biology and Land Use Planning

Growing concern over adverse impacts from persistent and increasing urban encroachment into the Grassland Wildlife Management Area prompted the Grassland Water District to move from project-by-project reaction to proactive GIS-based planning. Initially developed as AML scripts, the presentations explain the conservation biology principles of avoiding habitat fragmentation, maintaining landscape heterogeneity, and connectance. They develop the issues of scale and multispecies management through the use of a rich GIS database, satellite imagery, and TIFF-based photo documentation.
