The Development of a Pilot PC-Based Geographic Information System (GIS) for the Los Angeles Water System

The Graphics, Maps, and Records Group in the Water Operating Division of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is in the completion stages of a GIS pilot project. During the planning phase of the pilot project, a wide variety of GIS applications within the Water System were identified. In order to establish a versatile system that would enable utilization of applications identified during planning, the Water System of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power chose to automate a 4.5-square-mile area of manually drawn 600-foot-scale Gate Section Maps using a combination of PC-based CAD, GIS software, and existing digital in-house databases. The purpose of this is to demonstrate, when utilizing ArcCAD within the AutoCAD graphical environment, an easy-to-use functional GIS can be developed on a desktop PC.
