Pipes: An Interoperable Hydraulic Pipe Network Model

Pipes, a Smalltalk model for the simulation of hydraulic flows through a pipe network, utilizes data maintained by ArcInfo, the fiduciary of network infrastructure and state data. It is a heuristic model illustrating the communication between a geographic information system and an object oriented engineering model. Temporal changes of state are determined by the behavior of interacting objects in the network. Interoperation of ArcInfo and Pipes enables quasi-steady simulation of flow through the pipe network. Flows are governed by the physical laws of mass and energy conservation as expressed by Kirchoff. Changes in losses, induced by the closing of a valve or other network alteration, results in a redistribution of flow and pressure throughout the network.
