Application of Multiple Cell Size GRID Analysis to an Economic Model of the Implementation of Personal Communication Services (PCS)

In preparation for the auction of wireless Personal Communications Services (PCS) licenses held by the FCC, an economic model has been developed in GRID to estimate the cost of the infrastructure required to serve each bid area, based on marketing projections computed from Census data. Variable radio propagation limits over areas of different population densities have required the use of overlapping grids with different cell sizes. This presentation describes the main elements of the model, with particular focus on the operations requiring interaction between grids of different cell sizes, such as aggregating data from one cell size to another, or complex cell-by-cell processing. Also presented are special GRID programming techniques which were developed specifically to handle these situations.
