The Alabama Geographic Information Systems Exchange (AGIS)

The AGIS-Exchange was established on the premise that complete, readily accessible and consistent information help people make better decisions. This is especially important with spatial data. Due to the complexity of spatial data, it is generally the most expensive portion of the GIS. In many instances, government and private agencies are creating the same layers of data in buildings virtually across the street from one another.

In Alabama a private corporation, a university, and the USGS has teamed together to create the AGIS-Exchange. This non-profit entity is establishing a network through which spatial data can be exchanged and/or purchased. At the base of the AGIS-Exchange is a 1:24,000 seamless 7.5 min. quadrangle raster map of the entire state of Alabama. These quads have been georectified and meet all the data accuracy standards of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure. This information will be accessible through the Internet by the summer of 1995. The basic form of the data will be an ArcInfo coverage.
