Converting Nonstandard Maps

This presentation describes lessons learned while converting nonstandard maps for the Urban Vector Smart Map (UVMap) project sponsored by the Defense Mapping Agency. The issues to be described are as follows:

• Application of automatic feature extraction techniques,
  
• Verifying scanner accuracy,
  
• Problems due to varying cartographic specifications,
  
• Inconsistencies between the features found on paper maps and those defined in the product specification,
  
• Coordinating the data capture efforts of three contractors.
