The Applications of GIS in Petroleum Planning and Engineering

Defining Issue: Managing the oil wells, the pipelines and the equipment on the ground can be a complicated process, especially on a large oilfield area with more than 10,000 oil wells. GIS Solution: The Daqing Oilfield along with Daqing Petroleum Institute developed a workstation based application to assist oilfield managers with this process. Methodology: The petroleum planning and engineering application allows the oil field managers to add/maintain many kinds of data about the oil wells, the pipelines and the equipment on the ground; analyze the production of oil and water; use GRID to simulate the floods; and display the distribution of oil wells and water wells. The application can upload and download daily data automatically through the network. Software: The application was written using AML. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the application and its functions as well as to inquire into the basic frame and method of developing GIS application of petroleum planning and engineering and present the structure and technical route of the system.
