Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Developing Intelligent GIS

Defining Issue: Complicated systems such as GIS require sophisticated reasoning mechanisms for dealing with dynamic information. GIS Solution: It is proposed to utilize techniques in artificial intelligence to promote the intelligent information processing in GIS. In the early days information systems were mainly associated with techniques in database management systems. However, their usage is limited, especially for the systems where data are very dynamic and need intelligent decision making support in the presence of some uncertainty. GIS systems that deal with satellite communication can be of this sort. It is evident that techniques in Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) in artificial intelligence have tremendous capability of modeling such real-world situations. In this paper we propose to adopt KBS concepts for GIS. That is, a general GIS is associated with a knowledge base that has the ability to learn dynamically changing information. More importantly, such a system performs intelligent reasoning by working with different levels of uncertainty with regard to incompleteness of the knowledge base.
