Using ArcInfo to Create Publication-Quality Maps for the Interior Colombia Basin Ecosystem Management Project: The Story of the 1995 Esri "Best Cartographic Publication" Map  Paper Text

Defining Issue: ArcInfo can be used to create publication quality maps. The 1995 "Best Cartographic Publication" poster display demonstrates this well. There has been an overwhelming positive response to the spectacular color relief map highlighted by this display. Yet, there is a great demand for a detailed explanation of the techniques and principles used in creating this map. GIS Solution: Application of traditional cartographic concepts combined with the modern display tools available in ArcInfo helped to create a beautiful map. Methodology: Unfortunately, beautiful maps do not spring spontaneously from the computer whenever the button is pushed. The creation of the map highlighted at the 1995 Esri user conference was the result of months of work on the part of many people. A good deal of work went into the requirements definition and planning stages, where a clear vision of the product was developed. About two months were spent data gathering, editing, and checking data quality. Map construction and the rough drafts of the map spanned about two months, with final product refinements taking programs that manipulated the data for display and meeting the many requirements of the project. Some of the main features of the map were: traditional atlas style motif, tinted hill shading, extensive place name and text entries with all text and point symbols "parallel with parallels," latitude/longitude reference grid, double bar scales, and agency logo, citation, and disclaimer. This presentation will lay on the table all of the programs, data, and background information used to develop the award-winning map presentation. In addition many of the AML functions are being ported for use with the ArcView system. These capabilities will also be presented. Software: ArcInfo Version.6.1.2, Image AlchemyPS Hardware: IBM RS/6000, HP 650C plotter
