Creating Client/Server Based Logistics Applications Using ArcView and AvRoute V1.2DS

Client/Server-based technology is yet to be exploited as a medium for developing large-scale GIS based logistics applications. Most desktop network optimization and logistics services are implemented using a shared-memory model and operate as local services for the client. This computational model severely restricts the performance that can be achieved using desktop clients for large-scale logistics applications. To overcome some of the shortfalls in existing approaches we describe a client-/erver computational model, using Esri products and the AvRoute V1.2DS system, which provides a scaleable approach to the deployment of logistics applications in business environments. The advantages of this model are demonstrated for applications involving computer aided dispatch, fleet management, and emergency services provision.
