Mn/Model: An Archaeological Predictive Model for Minnesota
Defining Issue: Federal legislation mandates that federal agencies must consider the impacts of their projects to historic properties, which include archaeological sites. Conducting an archaeological survey of every project and then determining whether a site is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places is an expensive and time-consuming process.GIS Solution: The Minnesota Department of Transportation, with funding from the Federal Highway Administration, and BRW, Inc., are developing a high-resolution State-wide predictive model for archaeological sites. Methodology: MN/Model will be used as a planning tool, allowing planners to avoid areas of high potential for sites. If avoidance is not possible, it will allow for more efficient and cost-effective survey efforts by determining locations for intensive survey and areas where no survey may be required at all. By knowing in advance probable locations of significant archaeological properties, MN/DOT will avoid impacting these
nonrenewable resources.Software: The model is being developed in ARC GRID, with the help of S-PLUS statistical software. The results will be distributed with an ArcView application. The paper will discuss the modeling process and preliminary results.
