Interactive GIS on the World Wide Web

Interactive GIS on the World Wide Web is now possible through the use of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), the Common Gateway Interface (CGI), and a GIS scripting language such as ArcInfo's ARC Macro Language (AML). HTML forms provide a user interface to the GIS and its databases. A CGI script passes the input data to the GIS script, which performs the GIS analysis, creates any output maps and tabular data, and returns control to the CGI script. The CGI script then compiles the HTML-formatted output that the user's browser displays. This presentation describes one approach to implementation of these technologies. It remains to be seen how this technology will transform access to geographic data and geographic analysis, but a transformation is clearly underway and its potential is astounding.
