Organizing GIS Data for Hydrogeological Applications
Defining Issue: Organizing three-dimensional and time-dependent data in a GIS is a key issue when using GIS for hydrogeological applications.GIS Solution: A conceptual model for storing hydrogeological data in ArcInfo data formats and Oracle database tables was developed and implemented as a prototype within the State Geological Survey's information system infrastructure. The data base is primarily used for hydrogeological mapping and modeling (e.g., groundwater modeling) both inside and outside the agency.Methodology: The basic idea of the conceptual model is to group hydrogeological objects in thematic information layers. These information layers are created by methods (e.g., mapping processes) and consist of several types of spatial objects and their attribute data. Metadata tables support spatial and thematical database queries and data selection for further evaluation processes.Software: The data model concept was implemented in a prototype software application using ArcInfo, ArcView and
Oracle. The purpose of the paper is to show the use of the conceptual data model for serving different kinds of users. These are GIS specialists using ArcInfo, modelers using external hydrogeological models, and hydrogeologists who primarily use ArcView to query and visualize the database.
