User Interface Design Strategies for ArcView Version 3.0
Defining Issue: Development and design of a user interface within ArcView for add-on applications and extensions is an important activity that could lead to the success or failure of the interface within the user community. In ArcView a good user interface design must take into account several items such as the current ArcView interface and any other additional applications or extensions that may be loaded into ArcView, while meeting user requirements and expectations. The goal of this design should be to provide the user with a simple, easy-to-use, and recognizable interface for the additional functionality. GIS Solution: Application or Methodology: The use of a user interface design strategy allows the programmer to set basic guidelines that govern how the interface is built and how it interacts with the users. These guidelines should address the following topics as they apply to development of the user interface: portability, programmatics, appearance, placement, ease of use, and
user/customer-based standards and requirements. Software: This paper discusses ArcView and Avenue techniques related to user interface design. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate several user interface design strategies developed and implemented by TASC to support customer applications within ArcView.
