Where in the World is the Esri User Conference (Exploiting Feature Information Utilizing a Worldwide Gazetteer Database)  Paper Text

Defining Issue: Quickly finding the location of worldwide feature is an important and needed aspect of analysis of global events. GIS Solution: The Gazetteer Query, Management and Analysis System (GQMAS) developed by TASC provides an easy-to-use interface to manage, retrieve, display and analyze gazetteer features within a GIS application. Methodology: The GQMAS application allows analysts to query, display and analyze gazetteer features worldwide. The application provides fast access to over six million features managed in a Spatial Database Engine (SDE) database. The analyst may quickly find by spatial and/or attribute criteria gazetteer features such as populated places, airports, roads, ortopographic or hydrographic features. Software: The application makes use of C with SDE libraries, Oracle, ArcView Version 3, Avenue, and ArcView extensions for database themes and dialog editor. The paper describes the process of creating and loading the gazetteer database and describes the application interface built to access it.
