Agricultural Crop Monitoring, GIS Database Development, and Technology Transfer for the Bureau of Reclamation

The Bureau of Reclamation is charged with managing the use of water in the Colorado River. The Bureau chose Pacific Meridian to help the Bureau improve current management methods by providing GIS services, remote sensing training and support, and technology transfer. Under this contract Bureau personnel spent extended periods of time in Pacific Meridian's office learning GIS and remote sensing software and working side by side with Pacific Meridian professionals to build a system that maps crops and water use on the Lower Colorado four times a year. Pacific Meridian investigated a number of techniques for mapping, including using satellite data, to do change detection and use new aerial-born scanners and videography for integration into the mapping system. Classification accuracy was extremely high with an average of 93 percent of agricultural lands being correctly classified (USDI Bureau of Reclamation).
