Defining Issue: Developing an operationally practical and efficient multispecies habitat conservation plan. GIS Solution: The ep(x) toolkit provides analytic software and links between a GIS, vegetation models, watershed models, habitat models, a policy analysis component, and a linear programming solver, and back to a GIS. Methodology: The ep(x) toolkit coupled with ArcInfo and ArcView provides resource and land managers an analytic system of software for developing operationally explicit and efficient multispecies habitat conservation plans (HCPs). Landowners in north coastal California are using this system for preparing sustained yield plans and HCPs for a planning horizon of up to 120 years. Software: ArcInfo, ArcView, and the ep(x) toolkit were used for this case study. The software links and applications were written using Microsoft Visual Basic and Avenue, and linked to Microsoft Access database.
