GIS for the Rest of Us

Defining Issue: If we are to embark on a new era in the use of GIS, managers in many disciplines must be trained quickly. Professional development of university faculty and administrators should aggressively involve faculty from departments not traditionally associated with GIS. GIS Solution: Our university identified twenty academic departments that we perceived as nominal users of GIS. These departments were selected from those listed at www.Esri.com/resources/university/deptlist.html. Through aggressive marketing of in-house training, dozens of new faculty learned the potential of coupling geostudies to their existing courses. Methodology: ArcView on the desktop was selected as the course of concentration in 1997. A series of classes were held on both Windows and Macintosh platforms. Publicity and registration was managed through the training department's web site. A site license provided for loading ArcView Version 3.0 on dozens of lab workstations as well as hundreds of faculty office workstations. Software: ArcView Version 3.0, text processors, Adobe Photoshop, NotePad, HTML
