Back to Basics: Using ArcView Version 3.0 to Create a Public Query System  Paper Text

Defining Issue: Develop a user-friendly program to provide public access to data and maps of property within the Yakima Urban Area. The application needs to be dependable and allow a variety of types of queries, with easy access to information, independent of staff supervision. GIS Solution: Create a useful and simple browsing tool using ArcView. Use ArcView Version 3.0 to access the wide range of City of Yakima GIS data available in ArcInfo. Customize the application for public information using Avenue to safeguard data. Enable citizens to quickly obtain data without otherwise dedicating staff resources to meet requests. Methodology: The development of this program has spanned the life of ArcView Versions 1.0, 2.1, and 3.0. Recent enhancements to ArcView Version 3.0 which enables image libraries and other features have made the public query system a viable program. This application has also been piloted upon (and compared the development of) ArcView on each PC, Macintosh, and UNIX system. The end product is a browsing tool with intuitive operations. The achievement of this goal required extensive Avenue programming to make it look simple.
