Integrating GIS and MODFLOW To Model Groundwater Flow at Sandia National Laboratories/Kirtland Air Force Base
Defining Issue: Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) is applying a groundwater flow and contaminant transport model to support Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) site characterization and environmental restoration activities at the SNL, which is located within the boundaries of (KAFB).GIS Solution: The Site-Wide Hydrogeologic Characterization Group at SNL is developing and automating GIS applications as tools to help Sandia understand the mechanics of groundwater aquifers underlying KAFB and make educated decisions concerning contamination and transportation of pollutants in the groundwater.Methodology: The integration of MODFLOW and GIS allows for the development of a calibrated flow model to simulate groundwater conditions as well as flow paths and flow velocities. The GIS is used to pre- and postprocess model input and results. In addition, Sandia task leaders are able to view the spatial distribution of groundwater conditions and optimize performance of risk assessment studies and associated version of
the model.Software: MODFLOW, ArcInfo Version 7.0.4, ARCTIN, and ArcView Version 2.1 are the software being run on a dual processor Sun System SPARCstation 20. The purpose of the paper is to describe the modeling process and GIS applications for the project.
