The Long Way to an Integrated Road Network  Paper Text

Defining Issue: The Traffic and Transport Research Centre (TTRC) of the Ministry of Public Works in the Netherlands has, for many years, gathered data on various subjects concerning traffic (road) safety and transport. Data available include congestion, road usage, pavement conditions, average vehicle speed, road accidents, transportation from all kinds of goods from region/city to other regions/cities, and accidents and near accidents with ships. This has resulted in a variety of applications running on different sizes of computers, either GIS oriented or purely administrative applications, which are hardly able to exchange data with each other. About two years ago the decision was made to realize one centerline road network and to relate all other data to this network. GIS Solution: TTRC decided to use SDE for this centerline road network, Oracle and ArcView for all applications adding geometry-related application data in the database, and Oracle, ArcView, and MapObjects for retrieving data. For specific solutions there will also be ArcInfo applications. The Road Towards This Integrated Road Network: Modeling of the road network is extremely important, as the various applications that will use it have their own demands. The concept of the network is completed. The conversion of the existing road network to the SDE database has been completed and the first applications entering or retrieving data using the road network will be fully operational in January 1997. But this is still the beginning. A lot of other applications will be rewritten or even completely redesigned, new attributes will be added to the road network, postal areas, and waterways. Somewhere in between we will upgrade to SDE Version 3. But, most important, all these applications will use the same network, so there will be good opportunities for analyzing data.
