Using ArcView and Visual Basic to Manage and Visualize Stormwater Projects

The Public Works Department of Johnson County manages the Stormwater Program, which is responsible for all engineering related capital improvements to the existing stormwater conveyance infrastructure. The Stormwater Program identifies, tenders, and assigns work to engineering and construction firms for any stormwater capital improvements. A PC-based client-server application (SWAMI - Stormwater Management Information System) was developed in 16-bit Visual Basic to allow stormwater personnel to input, view, analyze, and extract financial information relevant to the project. Geographic analysis and mapping functionality is provided by ArcView. This paper will examine and describe the functionality of SWAMI, some organizational issues, the underlying database design, and interapplication connectivity issues.
