On-line Metadata and Geoinformation of Barcelona City
Defining Issue: There are several organizations in the Barcelona area that generate and distribute public, free geographical information. A data clearinghouse organization does not exist yet. Therefore, the geoinformation of the town of Barcelona is fragmented and difficult to find it. GIS Solution: A metadata index of the geoinformation for the town of Barcelona has been developed. This metadata index has been made available on the Internet, along with some graphic and attribute data. Methodology: Every source of geoinformation has been investigated, so that now it is possible to know the contact person, spatial aggregation, media and other metadata about the geographical information. The metadata and geoinformation has been left in the EUROGI WWW gateway. Thus, any user may query for Barcelona's data through an http browser and the WAIS searcher protocol. Once data has been found, downloading is also possible via ftp. This research emphasizes the need for sharing local GIS data through the diffusion
via the Internet of both metadata and geoinformation.
