Integration of GIS at the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC)

Defining Issue: The purpose of integrating GIS within the NDIC is to correlate geospatial data with drug trafficking analyses. This integrated data is then incorporated into the analytical process for developing strategic analysis for drug interdiction activities. GIS Solution: The GIS capabilities designed and currently being implemented by TASC at the NDIC provide a suite of analytical tools. Specifically, the GIS provides support for the collection, evaluation, organization, and correlation of geographic locations of drug traffic organization (DTO) activities analyzed during the production of Strategic Organizational Drug Intelligence (SODI). Software: This paper discusses the integration of ArcView (including Spatial Analyst and Network Analyst Extensions), ArcInfo, and Spatial Database Engine with other NDIC tools such as ORION LEADS and Oracle in the NDIC operational environment. The purpose of the paper is to provide a successful example of integrating GIS into an operational intelligence center environment.
