Updating TIGER with Local Digital Files
Integrating the increasing number of locally maintained digital geographic files with the TIGER database affords the U.S. Census Bureau a major opportunity to reduce maintenance costs, improve quality, and create more effective partnerships with the public, academic, and business communities. Since the early 1990s, Census Bureau geographers and programmers have been researching and developing automated tools to transfer data from non-Census spatial databases to update TIGER. While the process has not led to a black box solution, recent and successful updates to TIGER from a variety of local files provide a broad brush outline of existing capabilities as well as a framework for future developments. This paper will discuss recent case studies of successful digital exchanges using ArcInfo files, tools, and software.
