An SDE Data Warehouse for San Diego and Exciting New Technology for Data Access

Defining Issue: The Regional Urban Information System (RUIS) is well known for successes in mutual GIS database development and sharing agreements among City and County departments in San Diego. The RUIS Strategic Plan, conceived this year, now addresses some outstanding issues of data access. A highly available, centralized, up-to-date GIS warehouse must be developed that supports high-volume user access from the general public (via the Internet) and RUIS departments (via an Intranet). GIS Solution: San Diego Data Processing Center, Esri, and RUIS have completed the construction of a pilot SDE database and have formally tested SDE access in the RUIS community. An Internet data access application prototype that accesses SDE was also developed. Pilot Study: A successful pilot GIS database was developed using Esri's Spatial Database Engine (SDE) and Oracle RDBMS software. Since RUIS departments represent a large ArcView user base, ArcView Version 3.0, with its Database Themes extension, was selected as their user interface to the database. Additionally, a prototype for general public access of the SDE Database via the Internet was developed using Visual Basic, MapObjects, Internet Map Server, and SDE. This paper will explain the results of a County-wide three-day SDE data access trial and will discuss topics such as SDE data warehousing design, server resource load and capacity, SDE load on networks, ArcView and SDE interplay, and MapObjects Internet applications . SDDPC and RUIS have set a target date of June 30 for the full scale implementation of an SDE data warehouse and for the development of MapObjects/Internet and ArcView applications that will provide virtually unlimited access to the RUIS strategic data warehouse.
