Near Real-time Hydrologic Modeling and Forecasting Using GIS
Conventional hydrologic analyses can be enhanced by using GIS. A recent hydrologic model for a major watershed in Ventura County, California, has been reanalyzed by extracting hydrologic data from various ArcInfo coverages and shapefiles. The results of a design-level unit hydrograph analysis is presented with and without the aid of GIS. The more accurate hydrologic model was further calibrated using an actual storm, and the results are presented using Spatial Analyst. Spatial Analyst lends itself well to displaying rainfall distribution patterns and other hydrologic parameters, and it was used extensively for various contouring and shading tasks on this project.
