Delving the Depths
In May 1995 the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) began a Freshwater Initiative to assess the current status of Palm Beach County's freshwater chain of lakes and to develop a management plan for their protection, enhancement, and restoration. This project presented an exciting opportunity to apply the GIS technology ERM has been implementing since 1991. One of the greatest challenges was how to integrate the depth sounder, GPS, and GIS to develop 3-dimensional surfaces to calculate water budgets for the lakes and to estimate sedimentation.
