GIS Methodology Applied to Water Resources Management in Argentina's Territory  Paper Text

Defining Issue: Surface and underground hydrology of Argentina has been included into a primary database to define the National Water Resources Information Systems (NWRIS.) Political boundaries, main cities, surface watersheds, rivers, lakes, dams and power developments, and engagement stations were digitized. It has also been incorporated into underground water regions related with surface sedimentology in the country. GIS Solution: The NWRIS is presented in ArcView Version 2.1 format and will allow government offices, private institutions, and planners related to environmental and water resources organizations to obtain, add, and provide data from all over the country. Methodology: Argentina is a wide and diverse Country with an area of 2,700,000 kilometers. Approximately 1:25,000,000-scale maps were digitized to define the main geographical database including points, lines, and polygons features. The different entities were grouped, named, and renumbered according to an established priority system. The NWRIS is a watershed-oriented database, considering river basin boundaries as a relevant geography delimitation from the point of view of resource management. Software: PC ARC/INFO, ArcView Version 2.1, and PowerPoint 4.0.
