GIS and Transportation at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games

The 1996 Centennial Olympic Games was a larger gathering of athletes, officials and spectators than the Seoul and Barcelona games combined. The Olympic Transportation System (OTS) for the 1996 games was planned and developed by the 1996 Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games. As the CAD/GIS coordinator for the Transportation Department, it was my primary responsibility to plan and implement the OTS/GIS using ArcView Version 2.1. Individual customized routes were developed and implemented for athletes, officials, and spectators. Databases of route and scheduling information were linked to the route themes to develop transportation scenarios in real time as the environment surrounding the games evolved. This presentation will provide a view of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games from a GIS perspective that has never been seen before.
