The Promise of GIS in Urban Communities via Neighborhood School
Defining Issue: For urban communities whose needs range from assessing and harnessing neighborhood resources to the exposure of youth to a multitude of career options, the utilization of GIS technology holds tremendous promise.GIS Solution: Several local agencies and schools (The Orange Mound Collaborative, University of Memphis, Melrose High School, Memphis Housing and Community Development, The Private Industry Council, The Community Foundation, and Nations Bank) have organized several initiatives in an effort to aid in the dissemination of GIS technologies to a number of urban communities located in the City of Memphis.Methodology: In the first initiative, "The Maps to Success Program", was a summer pilot program for youth featuring education and training in GIS theory and application. The program consisted of three core program elements: classroom lectures, computer lab work, and fieldwork. Applying their knowledge of GIS gained from lectures and fieldwork, participants generated maps that
inventoried and assessed the location of businesses in their community. The amassed geographical data are currently being used to explore business investment opportunities in the community. Additionally, experiences gained from the program are being used to develop a comprehensive GIS education program integrated into the Memphis City School K-12 curriculum.Software: All GIS training and map generation was achieved using ArcView and Explore Your World with a Geographic Information System training booklet written by Esri.
