Vineyard and Winery Management: A Case Study in GIS Implementation
Defining Issue: GIS, GPS, and remote sensing blended for great wine making and management.GIS Solution: Gordon Family Ranch, a case study in GIS implementation using Trimble GPS and remote sensing for analysis in wine grape growing.Methodology: The agricultural application of GIS is enhanced by the use of GPS for reference points for satellite imagery and aerial photography. This blended information serves as the basemap data that allow ArcView Version 3.0 and Spatial Analyst Extension to do analysis of soil and varied inputs of chemical agents, tracking of chemicals for state required reporting, pest management, and other spatial analysis jobs. This allows the farmer to see various layers of information concurrently, therefore allowing him to make better decisions and better wine.Software: ArcInfo, ArcView Version 3.0, Spatial Analyst extension, VESTRA MapMaker, and Trimble Pathfinder software were used in this case study.
