Land Use Change Analysis in Logan, Utah, Using GIS  Paper Text

Defining Issue: Because of continuing high growth rates, monitoring land use and land use change is an important tool for important planning and community development decisions. GIS Solution: The City of Logan has implemented a process for establishing and maintaining a land use database utilizing GIS. Establishing a land use database required the creation of a parcel map of the City. This involved many data capture devices including digitizing, COGO and data conversion. With the parcel map in place, the process of gathering land use data began. To be able to compare land uses through time, data from 1977 aerial photos was interpreted . Current land use data was taken from a visual survey of the City in 1996. Then these two coverages were overlaid to produce a land use change map. Not only did the map show where land use had changed between the two years, but the type of land use also changed.
