GIS as a Tool for Tourism Information Management System  Paper Text

Turkey has been called "the cradle of civilizations." It has a magnificent past and is a land full of historic treasures covering 12 successive civilizations. Turkey also is a paradise of sun, sea, mountains, and lakes. Despite its richness in information and cultural wealth, tourism information is still handled in a traditional way, especially the Turkish Tourism Offices that are spread all over the world who face the challenge of answering questions on tourism information. Serving people on-line requires prompt answers on very special issues that can only be satisfactorily answered with the help of a GIS. GIS capabilities make it possible to answer spatial queries along with maps, images, text, and tables; also showing the shortest path, location of hotels, tourist sites, price quotations, and so forth. Such a tourism information database management system was developed under the supervision of Dr. Kilicals and by a group of CUA students as part of class work.
