Transportation Applications of Temporal GIS
This paper presents the results of a study on temporal GIS applications to transportation. Important concepts of temporal GIS are introduced and issues regarding implementation are discussed in the context of transportation applications. An update data model and a set of temporal query commands developed on top of PC ARC/INFO to explore the potential applications of temporal GIS to transportation will be described. Examples of temporal GIS applications in transportation planning and transit service evaluation are presented. Other potential applications in transportation planning, transportation infrastructure management, transit management, and so forth, are described. The characteristics of the transportation related data, the nature of the various planning and management tasks, and their implications to temporal GIS solutions are discussed.
