Geocoding in the Arab Region: A Cultural Mismatch  Paper Text

Defining Issue: In an increasingly growing market such as Egypt's (and other countries in the Middle East and north Africa), one can easily realize that geocoding is one of the most needed GIS capabilities. Unfortunately, due to many reasons, the simple matching of addresses applied in standard cases cannot be used. Work arounds and new localization of software should be applied so that barriers against many GIS applications in the Arab region can be removed. Methodology: The paper will investigate the two reasons why geocoding cannot be done in the Arabized version of ArcInfo: language and styles of local addresses. Some simple but temporary workarounds will be explained and then recommendations will be made on how to integrate these concepts in the ArcInfo software.
