An Analysis of the Relation Between Mental Tendency and Spatial Structure of the Landscape Using GIS

Defining Issue: For preservation of the typical grass landscape in Aso area, Japan, to research the spatial structure and extract the geographical character that have influence on mental tendency of the visitor in this area. GIS Solution: PC-based GIS visualizes the degree of importance on the map for landscape preservation resulting from the mentality investigation about the geographical character of this area. Methodology: On the Internet is the questionnaire investigation, with the image of pictures taken on the spot. The landscape components that exert a mental influence are analyzed by the Fuzzy theory. ArcView visualized the relation between this mental analysis and the spatial structure in this area (land use classification, vegetation, the gradient, visibility from the tourist road, and distance) on the map and the aerial photograph. Software: Java language is used for the questionnaire investigation on the Internet. AutoCAD, AutoLISP, Excel, and ArcView were used for spatial structure analysis. The main subject of this paper is to unify mental analysis and spatial analysis with GIS.
