Testing an Automated Process for Determining Bird Species Ranges Using Positive Sighting Databases

A discussion of a GIS application of breeding bird survey, Christmas bird count, natural diversity database, and other data sets, to test predictions of bird species range maps. An automated technique makes use of county bird lists, the California GAP vegetation map, and the California Wildlife Habitat Relationships habitat suitability models to predict species ranges. The predicted ranges are then compared with the positive sighting data to test map accuracy. The test results were then used to revise the range maps. Subsequent uses of the range maps include species distribution and species richness studies.
